The Anti-paleo

My goal for the next 7 days has changed a bit so I'm going to be on the anti-paleo for a bit. I'm going to keep posting so everyone can see exactly what not to do. I'm going to destroy my body for a week and try to gain 7lbs in 7days. This is gonna get frightful!

  1. Made my decision on the 7lbs and hit McD's for brunch
1030am sausage egg mcmuffin, hash brown, medium coke
breakfast burrito, hotcakes and sausage ($13)
I felt so sick after 20min, then passed out. carb sugar coma.
900pm Pompei angelhair pasta w/meat sauce, 1 piece of bread (w/butter) and a coke zero (not intentional it's all we had (poor Mandie had a salad).
11:00 right now and trying to decide on the extra 2 pieces of pizza I got from Pompei or running across the alley for donuts.

  2. Day 5 - Walked out the door this morning and forgot my stash of protein, nuts and fruit. It is not a paleo friendly world when you're caught without your bag of tricks.

9:00am - 2 eggs scrambled with mushrooms; 3 slices bacon; coffee
1:30pm - tomato soup & half a bread stick (corner bakery)
    5:45pm - 1/2 Larabar
7:00pm - 1/4 roasted chicken, pita (chicken hut); salad with cukes; organge

  4. Damn Rudy. You might get seven pounds over the weekend.

About to go to a bar to watch the SEC and Big 12 Championship game. I won't post what I ate, but it will be bad news.

  5. Out in Riverside, CA yesterday for work. Pre-WOD in the hotel gym (4 a.m.) had a Zone bar, then an orange and coffee post-WOD. Business breakfast around 8:15 a.m. not too bad: Eggwhite omelet with spinach, peppers, mushrooms; 1/2 orange; more coffee; one slice 9-grain toast (I know, not paleo; this it the struggle I have on the road). Then things started going downhill. The school I was visiting brought in lunch: pasta and lasagna with plenty of cheese, garlic bread (I've never seen so much white food in one place). Fortunately, there was an Applebee's nearby, and I was able to get a spinach salad with grilled chicken, roasted peppers, mushrooms, and pine nuts so I didn't have to eat the school lunch. But it wasn't enough to eat, so:
3:30 p.m. 2 Zone Bars while I waited for my first flight on my way back to Chicago. Tight connection in Phoenix around 7:30. I was starving, but the only choices were pizza, hotdogs, or Starbucks. Got a chicken sandwich at Starbucks on wheat with lettuce, tomato, mustard. Ate it once I got in the air with Diet Coke. Got home around 1:30 a.m., hungry and feeling crappy after all the sugar and grains, so I heated up some Brussels sprouts and turkey. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Travel is tough unless there's a refrigerator or kitchen in the hotel and unless I'm traveling on my own. In this case, I was with company colleagues and state regulators most of the time, which made it difficult to make consistent, appropriate food choices.
At the Robb Wolff nutrition seminar last April, I sat next to a guy who had this huge thermal case packed with paleo food. He told me he always takes it when he travels, but he's military, so he gets easier treatment going through security. That kind of case is not practical for me. I try to find a grocery store and pick up better food if I have a car or place to store perishables, but that wasn't possible on this trip. Would love to know what others do.
