Milk does a body...

Alright that was some good input on nightshades. Now, for all you guys/gals trying to pick up size... What do we know about milk??? A gallon a day? Post wod? Whatcha got?

  1. I know the following things:

    (1) I'm not allowed to drink it.
    (2) It's delicious.
    (3) It goes fantastically well with Special K Chocolate cereal, which I am also not allowed to have.
    (4) Anthony gets to drink chocolate milk twice a day... and I'm terribly jealous of him.
    (5) Most milk "substitutes" are crap. Except coconut milk, which is pretty good. But not as good.
    (6) If I ever decide to put on weight I'm drinking milk. As often as possible.

  2. Just a quote from Starting Strength in regards to gaining weight and mass:

"One of the best ways to move in the direction of these numbers is to drink a gallon of milk
a day, most especially if weight-gain is a primary concern. A gallon of milk per day, added to the regular diet at intervals throughout the day, will put weight on any skinny kid."

  3. I find almond milk to be a fine substitute for almost everything. It just doesn't go as well with cookies, which is alright, since I haven't made Paleo cookies yet.

  4. Milk is delicious cold. But something magical happens when you stick a steam wand in it, aerate it to create a layer of fine microfoam, heat it to 160 degrees, and pour it into a cup of espresso. It transforms into a life giving elixir that makes miserable mornings suddenly not so bad, improves your outlook on the entire day, makes you more likeable, and provides a perfect escape from all of life's problems for 5 minutes.

And we're not allowed to drink it.

  5. right. i read the same about milk too ... but the milk of a cow (and all the delicious foods made from cow's milk) hate me, my skin, and my digestive tract.

soy milk wreaks havoc on my hormonal balance (just ask poor matt, who got to experience these side affects during "that week") and rice milk has little/no nutritional value (let alone non-paleo)

... but i will give almond milk a try. however, i'm reading around and don't see much on how this will help me with weight-gain.

Zack, since you're looking to gain weight too, what are your thoughts on almond milk (or other "milks")?

  6. I find no substitute for milk and feel the same way about it as JJ does. Also, I prefer whole milk to skim milk so I'm screwed.

And I only like coconut milk straight from the coconut b/c I think of it more like juice than milk. Why doesn't anyone call it coconut juice?

Okay, I realize this comment is not helpful at all. Sorry :)

  8. Coconut water/juice and coconut milk are completely different things. Coconut water (some people call juice) is the water that's inside the cavity of the coconut. You drink that with a straw in the coconut. Coconut milk is made by squeezing out juice from coconut chunks.

  9. Milk is awesome. I actually stopped all dairy for about a month before the paleo+ challenge started to see how it impacted me, and I don't think I noticed a big difference. Since going paleo I cut out any grains during the week, and have noticed that I've gotten leaner, but not so much when I cut out milk. I started drinking chocolate milk (1%) for post-workout and in my before-bed shakes to try to 1) put on some lean mass and 2) it's delicious. My boss has been on the gallon of milk protocol for about a week and a half, and I'm not sure if I can physically drink that much.

  10. I miss chocolate milk. :( Turtle: I love vanilla unsweetened almond milk. I think almond milk tastes much better than the other pretend milk substances (well, it's at least in a tie with coconut milk, which I also love), and it has a good fat content which may help you with putting on weight if you drink a fair amt of it.

  11. I really miss chocolate milk! It actually used to be my hang over cure. I'm with the rest of the group on missing it but have actually gotten used to not needing it.

  12. I havent had milk in over 6 months and dont miss it at all! It makes me congested when i have it! Dont miss it dont even think about it until now! Shit a bowl of apple jacks with some nice cold milk sounds pretty darn good! BUT I will not touch the devil's elixir!

  15. Luckily I've never really been into milk, aside from the occasional bowl of cereal or cream in coffee, so it's been pretty easy to avoid/give up.

...and I dig the quote Erin! I'd rather have beer in my corn flakes than milk at this point.

  16. I am trying to put on some weight during the challenge, so I'm using milk, post workout only. I'm putting in about 10 oz of whole milk to my protein shake. I found a grassfed cow's milk from Farmer's Creamery at WF and it is delicious. I weighed in at 165 on Monday before starting this routine, I'm going to weigh in again in 2 weeks and am hoping for about 4-5 pounds. I've also been tracking my protein intake to make sure I'm hitting 1g/lb of bw, so far I'm on track.

I had been off milk except for the occasional treat/cheat here and there and can say I noticed I big difference especially with overall digestion and skin. Overall digestion doesn't seem to be an issue when I just have it post workout, but just in the couple days of doing this I've already noticed a couple blemishes here and there skin-wise that I hadn't had in quite some time.

  17. T- also, no experience with almond milk, but I haven't heard too many good things. I love coconut milk, but as far as weight gain, neither of these are at all comparable to dairy milk. They're both good fat sources, but don't cause the growth reaction/hormone response in the body that dairy milk does.
