Day 1

Day 1 is in the books for everyone. What questions/concerns do you have? What have you noticed? Are we angry yet? I know, I know, it's not positive but just keeping it real. Please comment with any questions, anything we or the community can help with!!!

  2. I'm not angry. I am f-ing furious.

No, I'm not either. I just wanted to say that, and to express my surprise at how relatively easy it is to do this, but how difficult I am finding it to get in enough protein & calories without going way over on carbs. I mean, I love meat and all, but I feel like if I put any more animal products in me you're going to have to cover me in celery salt. No ketchup, thank you.

As Prophet Homie said, All meat and no chocolate make Dana go crazy.

    Ok, not crazy, just rambling...

  3. question about BCAAs ... hearing all kinds of things about it from various sources but would like to hear your thoughts

  4. Another question: Sucralose ... not looking for a loophole. I'm getting all kinds of info on BCAA supplements brands (that happen to have sucralose) ... and if you look at the strict chemical composition of sucralose, it's basically the same thing as sugar ... soooo am I missing something?

  5. T- yep sugar. If you're going to do BCAA's do the pure powder, I found the Optimum Nutrition stuff mixes the best, doesn't mean it tastes any better than any of the other pure powders.

My opinion is they may help get you that last 1%-2% type gains once you've plateaued. By no means are the essential and you'll see significant gains without them just by cleaning up your diet. They can have some value in finding that last ab or two as your leaning out and in recovery for a competitive athlete. Again though, it's not a miracle powder.

  6. After all this IF talk I've been trying to catch up by doing my research on LeanGains. From what I've read, it seems like supplementing with BCAA's is mostly if you're trying to train in a fasted state. I think he said something like: training in a truly fasted state is detrimental, and that's why he recommends the BCAA's.

I'm curious to see if people are taking BCAA's only pre-workout as basically breaking their fast, or if they are taking them pre-workout despite already breaking the fast?

Or am I just way off here since I haven't gone through everything on the site yet?

  7. Jim, from what I understand (and someone plesae correct me if I'm wrong), the BCAAs pre/post workout don't count as breaking the fast, but rather replace whatever you'd normally have for post-workout (i.e. protein shake).

Also, Tery, just to clarify, the athletes using the BCAAs are mainly the people trying out IF and training in a fasted state. I've just been using them when I workout early in the morning and haven't eaten since the night before. If you workout primarily at night and your feeding window is in that 12p-8p timeframe, regular food should be good enough.

  8. thanks - I'm working out primarily mornings now. going to start trying IF next week when i've given my body time to adjust a bit more. i was looking at it as a pre/post wod kinda thing.

  9. @Anthony - you're right for the LeanGains rec, I'm just suggesting maybe the morning workouts on the LeandGains protocal is kinda kidding yourself and putting undo stress on your body. Note he does NOTHING that looks like a balls to the wall CF workout, in fact he isn't a fan of CF. I tried some fasted pre/post morning wod's with only BCAA's back at the turn of the year and it was awful. My recovery sucked and waiting till noon also sucked on those days, I was starving and all I could think about was eating (not healthy). Whereas my non-morning workout days on IF were no problem. Play with it if you chose, this was just my experience. I would not suggest it for workout days for morning folks.

  10. I took BCAA pre-wod, during-wod and post-wod today at the 4pm class. The BCAA supplements are not breaking the fast. They are used to supplement what you might have post-wod. I found the BCAA's today helped me not feel "empty" or "sluggish" during they WOD from the fast.

I have not tried the BCAA for the 9am class yet, but will be this Friday. I am also going to be trying the BCAA's for the 9am classes on Monday's and Tuesday's as well. I will report back as to how I felt those days as well.
